London: STRIKE leaves 300,000 commuters stranded

Transport Secretary Chris Grayling

A strike by train drivers brought Southern Rail services to a standstill on Wednesday affecting 300,000 passengers. The union had previously cited a range of grievances amounting to a wholesale “breakdown in industrial relations” on the lines, but said there had been “serious progress in resolving the issues at the heart of these disputes”.
The transport secretary Chris Grayling, has refused to rule out anti-strike measures to prevent a repeat of industrial action that crippled one of Britain’s busiest rail networks today.

Transport bosses and union chiefs have agreed to hold formal talks in a bid to resolve the Southern rail dispute but said a planned strike by drivers on Wednesday was still set to go ahead.
