THE GRIOT is a record about the distance between witnessing the world and discovering how much of that world you have been carrying inside you.
Across sixteen tracks, MUSIATA moves through countries, systems, memories, relationships and time. History becomes memory. Geography becomes identity. Public language finds its way into private life. The person recording the world gradually discovers that he is part of the record.
The title describes a function more than a genre: witness, recorder, storyteller, keeper of memory, provocateur and, when useful, unreliable narrator.
Famous Rivers brings one journey to its conclusion. Borrowed Air brings the record home.
