MUSIATA, half-masked, from The Griot artwork

Liner notes · About the artist

The griot colors outside the lines.

MUSIATA is a modern griot archive from St. Louis: part music catalog, part field notebook, part carnival testimony, where every song is a signal and every signal teaches something.

Warning Untamed imagination. Handle with curiosity.

Side A · Who is singing

Not a conventional musician. A griot with a microphone.

MUSIATA moves through music, story, history and visual world-building as a griot rather than a conventional musician. Southern Africa, Manchester and St. Louis all leave their fingerprints on the work.

The songs fold Southern African memory, St. Louis, America as spectacle, and the mask, as both performance and witness, into records, project worlds, signals and commentary.

A storyteller with a historian’s appetite, an unreasonable number of questions, and a sense of humor that does not always behave.
